General objective
To sensitize our students, mothers and community about the respect, care and protection of Mother Lake Atitlan and Mother Earth through our three educational programs from 2022 to 2034 for a healthy relationship with the environment of the lake basin.
Location
San Pedro La Laguna is a Tz’utujil Mayan community, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Atitlán in the department of Sololá, Guatemala.
Lake atitlan’s challenges
Today Lake Atitlán faces multiply problems due to the mismanagement of wastewater and other waste and the irresponsible use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and plastic, which in turn is putting the health of the surrounding communities at risk. These problems will not end without taking significant measures.
Only by considering the perspectives of all communities and prioritizing Mayan cultural practices of sustainable management and practicing a harmonious relationship with the environment can we contribute to ensuring that Lake Atitlán continues to be a source of health and well-being for generations to come.
Our History
Taa' Pi't
The name of our organization is in honor of the Tz'utujil Mayan elder Agapito Cortez Peneleu. He was one of the first to teach in the national school system in the years 1950-1983. He taught children Spanish while preserving Mayan culture
